“shore”, etc. (Fig. 3.2). In the définitions use is made of the “Glossary of
Terras” of the Shore Protection Manual [1984].
A beach is the région of unconsolidated particles that spreads landward
from the lowest low water line to the Consolidated région where significant
changes are seen (start of cliff or dunes). The seaward lirait of a beach is
the mean low water line (the intersection of any standard low tide datum
plane with the shore).
A coast is the stretch of land area from the shoreline up to a permanent
feature of the land mass. The area bordered by land and sea is the Coastal
area. The area extending landward from the sea is Onshore. According to
beach terminology, offshore is a moderately even zone of adaptable breadth,
starting from the breaker zone to the edge of the continental shelf seaward.
The shore is the thin strip of land in direct contact with the sea water, that
is, the area between the low tide level and high tide level.
The axis-system used can be described as follows (Fig. 3.3).
The x-axis is horizontal and parallel to the shoreline. It is directed
positively to the right for a person standing on the beach facing the océan.
The y-axis is also horizontal, perpendicular to the shoreline and positive
in the direction of the sea. Waves approaching with crests parallel to the
coast are therefore travelling along the y-axis in the négative direction. In
the case of a description of the shoreline the x-y plane is placed in the still
water level. The x-axis therefore coincides with the shoreline. For sédiment
transport considérations the x-y plane is placed on the sédiment bed in the
" ater. The z-axis is then vertically upwards from the bottom.
