Coastal Engineering: Theory and Practice
There are several théories behind the formation of mud banks and its
source. In Kérala the source for mud bank could be from river discharges
or offshore déposition of fine sédiments which are churned up during the
initial month of high wave activity during monsoon. There is a significant
dampening of the wave activity due to the presence of mud banks and this
invariably protects the adjoining Coastal area from the fury of monsoon
waves. The calm environment provided by mud bank very near to the shore
is indeed a boon to the fishermen during the lean monsoon period as the
nutrient rich sédiment particles in the mud bank attracts lots of fish thereby
providing them a safe area for fishing. However, recent studies by various
researchers (Moni 1971; Thomas et al. 2013) hâve pointed ont that some of
these mud banks are slowly disappearing and a spatial shift in the location
along the coast is also observed.
1.4 Summary
An introduction to the behaviour of the océan waves in the Coastal zone,
being the main driving force behind the movement of the sédiments, which
in turn govern the stability of the shoreline hâve been presented.
Questions that need to be answered through scientific methods are.
(i) Is the Coastal stretch considered dominated by onshore-offshore transport or longshore transport?
(ii) What is the magnitude and direction of the sédiment transport?
(iii) What are the modifications brought out in the sédiment pathways
along the coast due to anthropogenic activities (like mining, construction of dams, hard structures like breakwaters, seawalls, groins etc.)?
The above aspects will be discussed in this book with field examples.
