Coastal Engineering: Theory and Practice
In order to avoid ambiguity, the general descriptions used in setting the
tolerable discharges need to be broadly applied so that there distinctions
made, for example, between turfed/compacted gravel and format protection
such as armour stone or concrète blocks.
6.4 Summary
Guidance for wave run-up and overtopping provided by EurOtop Manual
[2007] and Shore Protection Manual [1984] hâve been used for the design,
construction and conservation of beaches etc. Apart from the two manuals mentioned, the guidelines for wave run-up and overtopping hâve been
provided by Besley [1999] on EA Overtopping manual, the TAW [2002]
Technical Report on Wave run-up and Overtopping at dikes and significant
new informations from EC CLASH by several nations. EurOtop Manual
advances ali these informations in current practice, also extend the prédictions on wave run-up and overtopping given in CIRIA/CUR Rock manual,
Revetment manual, British Standards BS6349, the ISO TC98 and also US
Coastal Engineering Manual. It also includes case studies and sample calculations for different structures. Along with this manual, it also provides
an online calculation tools to assist on overtopping prédictions for different
structures.
Problem I
An imperméable structure has a smooth slope of 1 in 2.5 and is subjected to
a design significant wave, Hs = 1.5 m at a water depth, d = 4.0 m. Design
mean wave period is Tm = 6 s. Water depth at structure toe at high water
is dtoe = 2.5 m. (Assume no changes in the refraction coefficient.) Find the
surf-similarly parameter (also called the Iribarren number) for the use of
wave run-up and wave overtopping calculations for long-crested, irregular
waves on imperméable (without water pénétration) and permeable slopes.
Find the height above the still-water (SWL) to which a new revetment must
be built to prevent wave overtopping by the design wave.
Solution
The surf-similarly parameter for irregular waves dépends on the wave steepness and structure slope.
