4. Coastal Erosion and Protection Measures Including Case Studies

4.8.4 Stabilisation of tidal inlets
General
A Tidal Inlet may be improved by just dredging, including the installation
of sand traps which may be located on the updrift side and where it is most
practical and convenient. This is where they are most efficient for trapping
of sédiments and at the same time présent minimum nuisance to navigation.
The suitable measure to stabilise an inlet can be identified based on the
flow chart given in Fig. 4.30.
Fig. 4.30 Flow chart for identifying the suitable means to stabilise an inlet.
Equilibrium by structural means
The stability of an inlet can also be maintained by means of installing
structural measures, like training walls, jetties, etc. Finally, it may be done
by combining structures with sand bypassing schemes. Such schemes may
be permanently installed and operated, or they function intermittently by
means of traps which are framed, operated or controlled by structures that
are shore connected, or offshore breakwaters/submerged reefs including
improved natural reefs.
