A challenge that wpd sportingly took on as the constructor and
operator of the offshore wind farm recognises its responsibility to protect the endangered porpoises as these marine mammals hâve very sensitive hearing. Therefore, before the construction phase, wpd assigned Oldenburg's institute fortechnicai
and applied physics [itap], They listened to the project area with
recording instruments [hydrophones] in order, as Félix WeiE
says, to measure "today's underlying noise level of the North Sea"
at the Butendiek site. The results of these recordings show that
the underlying noise level lies between 120 and 130 décibels.
Biologists around Félix WeiE working with the experts from itap
drew up a précisé soundproofing concept to enable them to actually meet the tough demands imposed by the BSH. When the
pile-driving work began at exactly 8.10 p.m. on March 31, 2014,
biologists from the BioConsult SH team as well as technical experts from itap were on board the Madog with their measuring
equipment to monitor the site and to relay ail noise activities during the construction phase as precisely and quickly as possible
to wpd's main office in Bremen and simultaneously to the BSH in
the form of a digital file. "The noise immissions were the focus of
spécial attention from ail concerned and the nature conservation experts during the pile-driving phases", States WeiE unambiguously.
