HOWEVER, A HIGH DEGREE OF LOGISTICAL SKILL AND FAST RESPONSES ARE REQUIRED TO ENSURE THAT THEY SUCCEED. IN
THE PEAK PERIOD OF THE INSTALLATION PHASE, OVER 400 PEOPLE ARE WORKING SIMULTANEOUSLY ON THE CONSTRUCTION
SITE ON UP TO 30 VESSELS.
Many of these workers hâve been brought eut to sea via the
port of Havneby. In this period innkeeper Helle Thomsen has
probably counted more Butendiekers than touriste among her
guests. Her Havneby Kro, "privileged since 1863", as it says on a
boardovertheentrancetoherguesthousewitha"hyggeliger"(cosy]
restaurant, was constantly booked out for months on end
because employées from wpd, fitters and technicians, ecologists
or the crews of the crew vessels were accommodated here.
"There used to be a lot of shrimp trawlers in the harbour here but
today there are only a handful that go out into the North Sea",
the young manageress behind the bar recounts. "There's also not
much agriculture left here on the Southern side of the island", she
goes on to explain and she is ail the more pleased, therefore, that
offshore wind power has brought new life to the small village beyond tourism, but also to her business. Her sister, Anne Thomsen,
works in réception in the Butendiek office.
Richard Tibbs, too, likes to stop at the Kro when his day's work
is done. The master of the crew vessel, Sure Swift, which every
day brings personnel to the construction site from Havneby. His
vessel was specially built for this purpose and has no more than
a three-man crew. Tibbs has already worked on the construction
of other offshore wind farms. "We bring fitters and technicians
directly to the foundations, a délicate manoeuvre. It's as if we
literally kiss the structure with our fiat bow", says Richard, describing the docking process. "But if the waves are too high and stepping overonto the ladder of the transition piece istoo dangerous,
I sometimes abort a transfer", says the Englishman decisively. "I
won't compromise on people's safety", he emphasises on board
his vessel.
