5.3 Neutral Density yn=28.12 (Fig. 10c)
The surface of yn=28.12 depicts the distribution of LCDW; its core lies typically at
depths of 500-800 m in the gyre. Whereas the depth of this surface still shows a
sharp ACC-Ross Gyre boundary, other parameters do not show any front associated with the northern boundary. The inflow of LCDW along the Southern limb is,
however, seen in the salinity field, with the 34.73 isohaline marking the westward
pénétration of LCDW, consistent with the pattern of UCDW. Compared with the
upper surfaces, the range of water characteristics north of the continental slope is
considerably reduced, so that some patchiness observed in the salinity field may be
due to undersampling and observational errors. Both Fig. 9 and 10c show maximum salinity values within LCDW exceeding 34.73 along the Southern limb of the
Ross Gyre. These values are at least 0.03 higher than maximum LCDW salinities in
the Southern limb of the Weddell Gyre, which eventually cause higher salinities of
the bottom water formed in the study area.
