He participated as the scientific responsible in many research projects
financed by national agencies and the European Commission (11th and 12th
Directorate General). He contributed to the MAST program as an expert,
participated in the Modeling Coordination Committee of the MAST program, and has had numerous consultantships with private enterprises as
well as the public authorities of Greece in projects related to coastal zone
management.
He served as member of the governing board of the National Centre
of Marine Research of Greece (1985–1990); as chairman of the board
of the Port Authority of Thessaloniki, Greece (2004–2006); and as vice
chairman of the governing board of the International Hellenic University
(2007–2010).
He is now a professor emeritus of AUTh.
Panagiotis D. Scarlatos earned his diploma
degree (1972) and doctorate degree (1981) in
civil engineering at the Aristotle University
of Thessaloniki, Greece. In 1989 he joined
Florida Atlantic University (FAU) as a faculty
member of the Ocean Engineering Department
before moving to the Civil, Environmental and
Geomatics Department, where from 2005 to
2013 he served as the department chairman.
He is currently a professor in the same department and director of the Center
for Intermodal Transportation Safety and Security.
Before joining FAU he worked as a research associate at Aristotle
University of Thessaloniki, the University of Florida, and Louisiana State
University. He also worked for the South Florida Water Management
District as a staff water resources engineer.
He taught, conducted research and served on committees for a wide variety of water resources and environmental engineering areas. He has written
more than 130 technical publications and received as principal investigator or co-principal investigator research funding of more than $3.3 million
from local, state and federal agencies. He has served as an expert witness in
a variety of national and international cases pertaining to water resources
and related infrastructure.
He was awarded for two consecutive years a NATO-sponsored scholarship and was a Fulbright scholar research grantee.
