Christopher Koutitas graduated from the
Department of Civil Engineering at Aristotle
University of Thessaloniki (AUTh) in 1970. He
attended the graduate program in water resources
and earned an MSE from the Department of
Civil and Geological Engineering at Princeton
University in 1971, supported by a university
scholarship. He earned a doctorate from the
Department of Civil Engineering at AUTh in
1976.
Dr. Koutitas conducted research on coastal
modelling from 1977 to 1979 as a post-doctorate research fellow on a British
Council Fellowship in the Department of Civil Engineering at Manchester
University.
He served as a professor of coastal and harbour engineering in the
Department of Civil Engineering at Democritus University of Thrace from
1980 to 1986, as a professor of coastal and harbour engineering in the
Division of Hydraulics and Environmental Engineering of the Department
of Civil Engineering at AUTh from 1986 to 2014, and as a visiting professor at the Department of Civil Environmental and Geomatic Engineering
at University College London during the academic year 2010 to 2011.
His main research activity area is computational modelling in coastal
and harbour engineering, aiming at the technically and environmentally
optimal design of coastal structures.
He has had more than 200 papers published in journals and international conferences, and he has written two relevant books, which have been
translated into English.
He has taught undergraduate courses in coastal and harbour engineering
and computational hydraulics and graduate courses in marine environmental protection and coastal zone management for more than 35 years. He
organized and ran a European universities network within the Erasmus
programme related to education on coastal engineering.
