4.3 Review of the Structure of Water
The theories of water structure are now briefly reviewed. Several reviews and monographs
have appeared summarizing the status of research on the structure of water. An excellent
survey was given in the books edited by Franks (1972). We can divide the water structure models into two major categories: the uniformist, or average, models and the mixture
models. Both models recognize that water is a very structured liquid; the major difference
between the two models is that in the mixture models the simultaneous existence of at
least two different states of water is thought to be present.
