Marine lipids
analyses of lipid extracts may provide a rapid screening method to
evaluate the potential toxicity of algal bloom samples through the
relative proportions of saturated and polyunsaturated constituents
within the free fatty acid chemical class.
Acknowledgments
This study is part of the Ifremer programme Efflorescences Algales Toxiques. It
was partly funded through a contribution from the French National Programme
on Harmful Algal Blooms (PNEAT) and a Research Grant from NSERC (Canada).
We are indebted to our colleagues G. Arzul and E. Erard-Le Denn for helpful information and comments on the manuscript.
