Abstract
We investigated lipid distribution and fatty acid composition of the
lipid classes of the gorgonian Rumphella aggregata. Free fatty acids were
also analysed. Fatty acids were identified by GC/MS of their N-acyl pyrrolidide derivatives. About 40 fatty acids (12-24 carbon atoms) were
identified, including high levels of polyunsaturated ones. 20:4 (n-6)
(arachidonic) and 24:5 (n-6) acids were found at high levels in neutral
lipids (23% and 11% respectively). The latter acid was also present in
phospholipids. A new fatty acid was identified, namely 9-methyl6,9-heptadecadienoic acid.
Introduction
Although the fatty acid composition of many marine organisms such
as sponges is frequently studied, it is not the case of gorgonians. An
unidentified sublittoral Caribbean gorgonian showed low amounts of
polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), whereas amounts of other classes
of fatty acids were at least equal to those described in other marine
invertebrates (Hooper & Ackman, 1972). The fatty acid composition
