Marine lipids
methyl esters showed something odd about the 20:1 area and the investigation then led to the 20:2 and 22:2 NMID. Another instance was a
request by a local biologist that I examine the dorsal fat of the giant
(500 kg) leatherback turtle. In most years, a few strands in September
in Nova Scotia. One of his Chinese students said that the turtle oil was
a valuable medicine. Again, on the capillary GLC chart an odd-looking
16:1 peak turned out to be trans-6-hexadecenoic acid. The link to jellyfish, their sole food, was reinforced when the liver oil of the giant ocean
sunfish Mola mola also contained this fatty acid, since it also lives on
jellyfish, animals which we have yet to investigate for lipids and fatty
acids in detail. Making friends among the FRBC biologists and following their work enabled me to take a broad view of lipids in marine
life ranging from plankton to whales. The technological management
was tolerant of these activities as long as the research was novel and well
done.

In 1979 I moved to the Technical University of Nova Scotia (TUNS) and
mto the new Canadian Institute of Fisheries Technology. This was just
in time for GLC to include the newly introduced flexible fused silica
capillary columns, and research became exciting again. Research Associates such as J.L. Sebedio and W.M.N. Ratnayake relieved me of some
responsibilities and with student in need of research projects I could
look again at tocopherols in shellfish and salmon and hydrocarbons in
mussels for the offshore petroleum industry.
Among my trips to France for conferences was one to Marseille about
1976. Aside from visiting the Château d’If to renew a boyhood interest
in the Comte de Monte-Cristo, one other important event took place.
