importance of TAG: 5.6% of total lipids at salinity approaching 10; mean
for other stations: 0.7%). These compounds which are produced within
nutrient limitation will later serve as energy reserve.
Another living compartment was also studied: the bacteria which can
be traced for their biomass and activity using another signature made by
branched-fatty acids with 15 and 17 carbon atoms (BrFAs). The bacterial imprint displayed the same type of distribution as PUFAs: (i) a slight
decrease in winter with an average of 0.02 µg/mg SM, (ii) a marked
increase in spring, from a minimum value, 0.01 µg/mg SM at S = 0.3
to reach a maximum at S = 12.4 (0.52 µg/mg SM or 2% of total fatty
acids). This suggests a tight connection between the two biological
compartments: plankton and bacteria in the Danube Delta.
