Abstract
An abundant population of the mytilid “Modiolaria” fischeri was sampled at about 860 m depth within the upper part of the Capbreton
canyon. The study of this material allowed giving some new informations on the ecology and the biology of this deep bivalve, a presumed
endemic species from the bav of Biscay.
Introduction
Within the framework of the Oxybent research programme dedicated to
the study of benthic communities from the Capbreton area in relation
to bottom oxygenation, samplings were periodically performed with a
multinet sled (see Dauvin et al., 1995) at several sites from the shelf edge
down to 1000 metres depth. During Oxybent IX cruise, a new station
was added to the regular sampling programme (fig. 1), located within
the main channel of the Capbreton canyon (haul referencc: St. J, TS14R; 24 June 1999; 43°37.88 N-1
° 52.4 _ W at the end of the wire out; 857865 m water depth).
