Area under scope
The Rîa de Pontevedra ( fig. 1) has a surface of 141 km 2 , a mean depth of
31 m and a volume of 3.47 cubic kilometres. It is oriented in the SW-NE
direction with the Iutrez river in the innermost part of the ría and the
Onza and Ons islands in the outer part of the estuary. The Ria de Pontevedra communicates with the coastal shelf by means of two entrances.

The municipalitv of Pontevedra, which is located in the innermost part of
the ria, is the biggest and most industrialized city in the area. The most
important harbour is located in Marin, in front of Tambo islet in the inner part of the estuary.
The Lérez river is also in the innermost part of the Rfa de Pontevedra.
This river is the main freshwater input in the estuary. The monthly river
run-off ranges from 2 to 80 m
3 .s
4 following a pattern similar to the
rainfall one. The monthly average of the river run-off is represented in
figure 2 both for the period of measurements and for a period of twelve
years (from 1980 to 1992).
