Abstract
This study focuses on the seasonal evolution of phjtoplankton productii >n within the Gironde plume waters in the bav of Biscay and the role of
phosphoms as a limiting factor of this primaty' production. Results of
cruises carried out from winter to late spring 1998 and 1999 bring into relief two important periods for the primaty production. In late winter, the
early phytoplankton blooms rapidly exhausted phosphate within the
mixed layer. In spring, phosphate kept in being undeteetable and the
primary production became phosphorus-ümited. It is suggested by the
rapid cycling of phosphate (1 to 2 hours), the competition for phosphate uptake towards a greater efficiencv of bacteria and very high alkaline phosphatase activities associated to phytoplankton. The consequence of the phytoplankton P limitation is the structuration of algae
towards the dominance of small phytoplankton cells in spring.
