ABSTRACT - The bacterial study of the municipal treatment plants of Morlaix and Toulon (France) was conducted
in a sanitary point of view. Percentages of removal of faecal coliforms, streptococci and Salmonella were about
90 % (1 U log) for the activated-sludge process, and between 0 and 50 % for the physical-Chemical treatment.
Because of the high bacterial concentrations, fluxes discharges in the environment are still important. The by-pass
of raw sewage by the treatment plant, when affluent volume is too high, can reach 85 % of the total coliforms
plant discharge. In case of a marine disposai, sait-tolérance is one of the main characters allowing survival.
Waste-water strains of E. coli and Salmonella show an intrinsic sait-tolérance of 20 g/l NaCl ; so further studies
of their survival in Coastal marine areas would be necessary.
