ABSTRACT : Marine taxicity of domestic sewages at Toulon Est and Morlaix treatment plants was globally studied,
with raw or treated sewages. Some compounds, either noticeable by their own taxicity or/and by output levels, were
also specifically studied on the basis of littérature compilations or in vitro complementary experiments. Seeking
for a toxic global effect of sewages ensured to select sensitive methods and to outline secondary deleterous effects
of Chemical treatment. "Scope for growth'' on adult and post larvae of mussels revealed only weak effects of Toulon
urban discharge, whereas fertilisation and embryonic development tests (molluscs and echinoderms) or
phytoplankton survival test gave better results ; sea urchin tests (P. lividus and S. granularis) finally praved to be
the most significant. While raw sewage of Toulon has no observable effects in spermiotoxicity and embryotaxicity,
coagulating agents, when added to, evidenced increasing taxicity, as follows : Al£04 > FeCl, > FeClSO *
with
enhancement by polyelectrolytes. Such toxic effects are détectable in the plume area or in sédiments of affected
area but, toxic substances released after flocculation are still unknown. As to contaminants, instanianeous dilutions
observed in Morlaix and Toulon really reduce the majority of toxic compounds to normal concentrations of Coastal
waters, except for détergents, which raise concentrations harmful for marine environment. Chlorine, as sewage
treatment reagent, generally produce more toxic compounds with the following sequence : chloramines (especially
mono CA) > free chlorine > total residual oxidizers. AU these results are discussed and emphasized the real
importance of treatment choice for raw sewages.
