EVOLUTION DES TECHNOLOGIES D'ELIMINATION DES
MICRO-ORGANISMES

ABSTRACT - Wastewater contains high concentration of fecal bacteria and is frequently contaminated by
pathogens and viruses. This could induce sanitary risks when the point of discharge is in marine zones with intense
human activities (beaches, seafoods and fishes production). To avoid such a contamination, an adapted treatment
must be carried ont for the destruction of microorganisms. From 99.9 % up to 99.99 % ofbacterial populations
must be removed in order to meet the quality standards. Various techniques can be applied including treatment
with high détention time of wastewater (lagoons), sand filtration or use of Chemical or physical reagents (oxidizing
agents, radiation, filtration). Each treatment has obvious advantages and disadvantages. The présent paper tries
to give the main characteristics of each disinfection technique in order to offer the best choice to answer a spécifie
problem. For ail treatments, the quality of water upstream of the disinfection step must be of the best possible
quality specially in terms of suspended solids and ammonia concentrations. A good example of treatment line could
be : conventional plant for carbonaceous and nitrogen removal, tertiary filtration and disinfection by ozone or U. V.
light.
