D. J. RANDALL
Schumann et al., 1969). The changes in transfer factor are probably
in part related to changes in the pattern of blood flow in the gills
caused by increased levels of circulating catccholamines ( see Section
11, A, 3 ) . The increased flux of sodium across the gills of trout during
swimming in freshwater is probably alleviated by a rise in blood cortisol
levels (Donaldson and McBridge, 1967) which causes a reduction in
sodium excretion in the kidney (Mayer et al., 1967).
ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
I would like to thank Dr. David Jones for reading and criticizing this nianuscript, which was prepared while the author was a John Simon Memorial Cuggenheim
Fellow in the Zoology Department, University of Bristol. I would also like to thank
Professor G. M. Hughes for permission to use the facilities of his department during
that period.
