have been grouped under the collective name sideromycins (169). They
are believed to act as specific inhibitors of iron-containing growth factors
(170a) constituting the group of sideramines (170b, 171, 172a). The
compound l-amino-5-hydroxylaminopentane occurs in acid hydrolyzates
of several sideramines and sideromycins (172b) as well as in the antibiotic nocardamine (XLII) (172c) which, iron-complexed, is identical
with ferrioxamine Ε (163a). The related l-amino-5-hydroxylaminopentan1-oic acid is a component of mycobactin, a growth factor for Mycobacterium johnei biosynthesized by M. phlei (172d). Table III also indiTryptophan
