When it is bleached and neo-b retinene added in the dark, it regenerates with the same A max . All these pigments are identical with other
rhodopsins in their prosthetic group, and owe their differences in spectrum entirely to the possession of different opsins. For this reason we
prefer to call them deep-sea rhodopsins.
From this point of view, disregarding for the moment a few exceptional cases, one can recognize a major transition of rod visual pigments
