FIG. 5. Synoptic representation of an experimental series of P. Sträuli obtained from
adenocarcinoma of mouse. 6 different tumour individuals are represented. The abscissa
shows number of days. Framed fields = palpable tumours. Black fields = measurable
tumours. Simple line = tumours not demonstrable. The group 'strong combination'
influenced by Colchicine and E 9 during 20 days shows one type of representative
regression and one case of continued tumour growth. The group 'weak combination'
(treatment only 15 days with the combination E 9 -Colchicine) shows mostly continued
tumour growth after previous longlasting entire inhibition. The control only shows
tumour growth.
These statistical reasons prevented us from arriving at clear conclusions concerning Neukomm's results. It was therefore decided to
start a similar experimental series and also to base the investigations
upon histological studies. Dr. P. Sträuli has tried (Sträuli, 1959) to
develop an experimental procedure which promised to give reproducible
results. Sträuli tested the reaction of the transplantable adenocarcinoma
EO 771 in C 57 BL mice (Fig. 4). Intraperitoneal injections of the
combined morphostatic substances had very little influence on growth of
chicine treated group showed very little growth of the tumours, longer
survival and several regressions. In the group treated with combined
solutions of E 9 and colchicine the tendency to regression is strong, even
some older tumours regress and the survival is also better than in the
controls (Fig. 3).
In the case of Neukomm the synoptic graphs are superior to the
calculation of mean values for the whole group. Simple mean values of
groups of ten might possibly not permit visualization of the simultaneous
appearance of growing and regressing tumours in the same experimental
population. One postulate in tumour biology seems to be therefore to
present the individual growth curves of tumours.
