measured. It should therefore be noted that they may not represent
maximum values.
Most authors have reported very low values for endogenous carbohydrate in cultured cells (Gill, 1938; Nirenberg, 1958; Peppers,
Westfall and Earle, 1959; Roussy and Craciun, 1928) but W u (1959)
falls within the above range and although each cell has its own
characteristic value this does not seem to be closely correlated with its
glycolytic capacity. On the whole it seems to be more closely related
to the amount of cytoplasm in the cell (Phillips et al., 1960). Most ofthe
results reported in Table I V were reported before it was appreciated
