It is tempting to speculate on the formation of the layers in the light of
various possible generation mechanisms. Clearly the layers are related to the
density and current structures. In most cases the overall stratification and
current shear are considerable, the stratification k i n g the dominating
factor.
In cases of very weak stratification, it is conceivable that the density
perturbation due to the tracer solution generates artificial effects. Doublediffusive phenomena could possibly bc caused by a three or four part system
