7 THE SUBSURFACE ENVIRONMENT
through the history of an evolving sedimentary basin (Cousteau, 1975; Neglia, 1979;
Bonham, 1980). Attempts are now being made to model mathematically fluid movement through basins with time, as an aid to predicting the distribution of petroleum and
mineral deposits (Bethke, 1985). This aspect will be discussed in Chapter 10. The study
of subsurface fluids and their dynamics is evolving rapidly at the present time. It is now
unifying geological thought, pointing out the related origin of sediment diagenesis, petroleum migration, and epigenetic mineral emplacement.
