Indian Ocean Coastal Biome

immediate access to the subpycnocline phytoplankton production. Those living in deeper
water may be expected to have access only to sedimentation of detrital material.
Synopsis
The generalization offered by climatological data representing the entire province is
not very helpful. It suggests merely that the shoal, permanent pycnocline is moderately
deepened during austral winter from 30 m (summer) to 70 m June–July so that it lies
shoaler than photic depth only in summer (Fig. 10.9). There is some increase of primary
production rate with the entrainment of nutrients during the deepening phase of mixed
layer, although chlorophyll accumulation occurs only during the period of declining
productivity.
