Chemical and mineral composition of four benthic algae of the area Kouali (Tipaza)
Abstract: The aim of this work is to evaluate the chemical composition of four species of benthic algae
collected in the area of Kouali (Tipaza) from the point of view of develop them in animals feeding, in
particular in fish.
The first part of this memory is devoted to a bibliographical study including two chapters. The first
chapter includes an outline on the research tasks realized on the benthic marine algae in Algeria, the
importance and the interest of the use of the macroalgae and the food resources used in the food of fish in the
Mediterranean area. The second chapter is devoted to the nutritional characteristics of the macroalgae.
The second part includes three chapters gathering the methodology of work for the realization of this study,
the results about the quantity determination of the crude protein (MAT), of ashes (MM), the crude fiber (CB),
the macro-minerals, the trace elements, and the study of the temperature effect of sea water, species and the
period of harvesting on these different compounds contents.
The results obtained reveal us on the one hand that the temperature of sea water does not have a direct
effect on the chemical composition and on the other hand, that no significant difference was found at both
Cystoseira studied with regard to their contents of chemical compounds (MAT, CB, MM) or on the
variations in the latter. However, a seasonal variation of the chemical composition was highlighted at these
two macroalgues. These last present high percentages of MAT during in autumn and of the high percentages
of CB and MM in summer. Even if our plants do not present high percentages of MAT, they have however
high percentages of MM of with their wealth in K, Ca²+, Na+, Iron and Zn.
Taking into account the nutritional quantitative requirements in mineral elements needed for the fish
growth, the macroalgae can be used like food complement in a piscicultural feeding. The low contents of
nitrogen and phosphorus of the studied macroalgae are explained by the fact that the sampling site "Kouali 3"
Tipaza, presents low quantity of nutritive elements (not polluted site) from which interests leadings for other
research on other species of algae in other sites.
Key words: Macroalgae - Chemical composition – Temperature – Seasonal variations - Phaeophyceae –
Ulvophyceae – Fish feeds.
