SUMMARY
Sustainable development concept dedicated since the Rio Conference, is a choice of development, which Algeria
has subscribed as well as the international community. A choice dictated nationally, not only by the need to
rationalize the management of resources, predict future socio-economic development of the country, but above
all because of a concern for continuous improvement of the quality of life of the Algerian citizen. Chapter 17 of
Agenda 21 on the protection of the marine environment requires Contracting Parties shall take all feasible
measures to prevent and mitigate the effects of pollution, protect the maritime area against the adverse effects of
activities human, to preserve the health of humans and marine ecosystems. In this regard, the knowledge of the
state of the environment and its corollary environmental information are of paramount importance. Also,
contracting parties are required to establish and publish regularly reviews of the quality of the marine
environment and its evolution to the marine area concerning them. To ensure a permanent and sustained control
of the quality of the marine environment to prevent or fight against the various sources of pollution, national
marine monitoring programs are developed throughout the Mediterranean. The evaluations of the quality of the
marine environment are an integral part of programs to protect marine and coastal areas. In order to participate in
the monitoring of the Algiers region, this study aims to evaluate the quality of the marine environment of the
Bay of El Djamila for the establishment of a structured local marine environment monitoring network. Indeed, if
recent work which had the purpose of studying the bay helped to gather relevant information, the bay is today
still threatened by new problems where previously little highlighted because it is still considered as in its virgin
state. The inclusion of these issues through the establishment of a monitoring network for the management and
restoration of shoreline in the bay is one of the major issues of the future. One of the main aims of this work is to
evaluate the storage of trace metalic elements: lead, iron, copper, zinc and manganese in the marine sediment at
stations covering the entire bay and selected to become permanent stations, resulting in the creation of the
DJAMILA-DATA database performed to safeguard the results of the study and previous works in the bay.
