Volume 9 begins with a review by R. H. Millar on the biology of ascidians, soft bodied sedentary animals which in some parts of the world form a dense cover intertidal and in shallow water. The article examines knowledge of their food, growth, breeding and general ecology. Ascidians may form a major component in the population of fouling organisms on ships and harbour structures. E. D. S. Corner and A. G. Davies, and D. H. Cushing respectively cover, in two articles, important aspects of the cycle of nutrient salts in the sea. Corner and Davies consider the part played by plankton in utilizing and recycling nitrogen and phosphorus, while Cushing discusses the effects of upwelling of deep water rich in nutrient salts. The many areas of upwelling in the oceans are reviewed and an assessment made of the resulting production of fish. The subjects of both contributions are vital for an understanding of the quantity of food available to man from the sea. An article by J. A. Alien and M. R. Garrett records the occurrence of the chemical substance taurine in marine invertebrates and the physiological significance of its prevalence.
The concluding essay is a comprehensive review by N. Balakrishnan Nair and M. Saraswathy on the biology of those wood-boring teredinid molluscs known as shipworms, which cause extensive damage to wooden structures in the sea. The economic importance of a knowledge of ship-worms is great. This extensively illustrated article brings together for the first time information scattered through a vast literature.

This volume contains three articles on widely different subjects. The first is a reprint of a paper published by the food and agriculture organisation which has been modified for a scientific audience. Conservation is one of the ultimate aims of marine biological research and all marine biologists should be aware of the problems and of the international organisations concerned with the rational exploitation of the sea.
The second article is on the ecology of mangrove swamps and forests which fringe extensive coast lines in the indo-west-Pacific region. It is, surprisingly, the first full review of this subject, and includes a very complete bibliography and many illustrations. It should be of unusual interest to ecologists, both terrestrial and marine, to botanists and to zoologists. The final article concerns the biology of chaetognaths, concentrating particularly on their reproduction. It should prove of great value to plankton specialists, as well as containing much of general interest to morphologists.

The very great expansion of marine research in recent years has resulted in a mass of published results scattered through a very wide range of periodicals. In consequence it is becoming increasingly difficult to obtain a general picture of the overall advance that is being made in our knowledge of the many aspects of life in the sea.
It is hoped that the production of this new serial publication will help biologists to keep abreast of knowledge in the different lines of research on the biology of marine organisms. It is intended that each annual volume shall contain comprehensive review articles summarizing the general position of our knowledge in individual fields. Attention will be given to recent advances in fisheries biology, the results of research in which are often published in periodicals that may not normally be available in the libraries of university biology departments. These investigations are, however, of very general interest since they usually concentrate on the biology and ecology of a few individual species in greater detail than for other marine organisms.
When possible shorter review articles may also be published drawing attention to new developments and growing points in marine biology.
General articles on the biology of marine organisms will include information on the environment only in so far as it is necessary for an understanding of their habits. Articles will not be published which relate only to the physical and chemical conditions in the sea in relation to water movements and deep-sea oceanography.
Any suggestions from readers on fields of research that need reviewing and might form subject matter for future volumes will be welcomed. Editorial correspondence should be addressed to me at Wardour, Derriford, Crownhill, Plymouth, Devon.

This volume, the first of its kind, reviews and analyses all the information on the relationships between molluscs and symbionts, including phoronts, commensals, parasites and mutualists. The emphasis is on marine molluscs but information derived from freshwater studies is also included.
The first section contains a detailed analysis of the various factors which are known to influence such relationships, including those factors which influence or govern host-symbiotic contact, establishment of the symbiotic, and escape of particular interest are the extensive discussions of molluscan internal defence mechanisms, pathology, and physiology of intra-molluscan parasites.
In the second part of the book information pertaining to the systematics, life cycles, physiology, and pathobiology of various zooparasites of commercially important marine molluscs are considered in detail.
The volume is profusely illustrated, including photomicrographs and line drawings of all the parasites considered. It will be of interest to marine biologists, malacologists, parasitologists, invertebrate physiologists, ecologists and shell-fisheries biologists.

The first article of volume 8 is on paniculate matter present in the sea in the form of detritus and minute particles of organic matter. The possible part played by such material in the nutrient cycle of the sea is discussed. The second article gives an account of fish and prawn farming in brackish water ponds and in estuaries. Another article of contemporary interest supplies a balanced review of the causes and results of oil pollution. This supplies background information not generally available to the biologist and a comprehensive bibliography. The final contribution is on the faecal pellets of many bivalve molluscs, which form a significant part of the material in muds and supply nutrient matter to deposit feeders. A knowledge of their structure helps in the study of mollusc evolution.
