Description :
The biology of butterflyfishes is an edited book focused on the evolution, ecology and conservation of coral reef butterflyfishes. Butterflyfishes (family Chaetodontidae) are a highly conspicuous component of fish fauna on coral reefs throughout the world, and, owing to their strong dependence on corals, are often regarded as the epitome of coral reef fishes. That said, butterflyfishes did not originate on coral reefs. This book provides important insights on the evolution of these fishes and key events and adaptations that have led to the proliferation of butterflyfishes within coral reef ecosystems. Key to the success of butterflyfishes is the evolution of coral-feeding, which has been extremely well studied and is the central focus of ecological chapters in this monograph. This book highlights also key threats and important issues in the conservation of butterflyfishes and ends with an overview of current and future research directions.
