This book is about how essential nutrients and pollutants are transformed or accumulated as they move through the environment. It is about evaluating toxicity, risk assessment, modeling the fate of pollutants in the environment, and generally setting the goals for pollution prevention and control projects. Knowledge of these laws of nature is the basis for government regulation of emissions and effluents. It identifies which pollutants are critical targets for pollution prevention and control. Creating engineering designs to accomplish the goals will be the subject of the subsequent books.
