Description :
The purpose of this book can be simply stated. It is to present simple, safe and reliable methods for use in various types of aquaria, and to explain the principles behind these practices and the functions of any equipment associated with them. A wide range of techniques and ideas is covered, thereby providing a sound background for successful fish-keeping in freshwater and marine environments, at both tropical and coldwater temperatures.
The first part of the book is concerned with the environmental factors: air, light, water quality etc, which control the well-being of any aquarium. The three main types of aquatic system natural, biological and sterile are then considered in great detail. Two large chapters with many illustrations deal with the operation and usage of modern fish-keeping equipment, including the sub-gravel filter, the ozoniser and the protein skimmer. Full details of the construction of all glass tanks are given, together with hints and advice on electrical installation and safety. The all important subjects of food and feeding are fully treated, including methods of culturing foods such as brine shrimp, infusoria etc.
Finally, fish breeding is discussed in detail, together with much practical advice, and the various tests and measurements which the skilled aquarist can use in the aquarium are given.
