- This book, viz. “Applied Thermodynamics: Software solutions – Vapor Power cycles (Rankine cycle)” is a supplement to the Part-II of the popular, free ebook series on Applied Thermodynamics: Software Solutions by the same author, published by Bookboon.
Rankine cycle and its variations are used in Steam power plants, marine applications etc.
In this book, as with other books of this series, the focus is on the solutions to problems using computer software. Only the essential theory and summary of equations required for calculations are given at the beginning of the chapter.
Here, we have particularly focused on solving problems with the very useful software, Mathcad.
Since Mathcad does not have built-in functions to determine the properties water/steam, we have first written useful functions for properties of water/steam using data from NIST. Then, we demonstrate the ease with which one can do calculations, produce tables and graphs of results, and perform ‘what – if analysis’ with Mathcad, by solving a variety of problems.
Several Functions are written in Mathcad to simplify the standard and most often required calculations for Rankine cycle and its variations, which, the students, teachers, researchers and professionals may find very useful.
Mathcad programs are given clearly and transparently, so that those who need them can use them for their works.
S. I. Units are used throughout this book. Wide variety of worked examples presented in the book should be useful for those appearing for University, AMIE and Engineering Services examinations.

- This book deals with two chapters: Psychrometrics and Reactive systems.
Under Psychrometrics, which is the study of properties of air-water vapor mixtures, we, first give the definitions of various terms and also the thermodynamic equations to determine various psychrometric properties. Then, some psychrometric processes adopted in air-conditioning are explained with the help of Psychrometric chart. Two very good stand-alone calculators to quickly calculate various Psychrometric properties are explained.
Several very useful Functions are written in Mathcad to calculate various psychrometric properties. A summary of the Mathcad Functions written is also provided.
Under Reactive systems, basically, we deal with combustion. Combustion equations and their balancing by atoms of constituents is presented.
Stoichiometric Air-Fuel (AF) ratio, actual AF ratio, percent excess air, equivalence ratio etc are explained. Enthalpy of formation of compounds, enthalpy of combustion or enthalpy of reaction are explained.
Tables of enthalpies of formation and other tables for enthalpies of different species required for combustion calculations are presented.
Heat transfer during combustion and Adiabatic flame temperature are explained.
Also, many useful functions are written in Mathcad and EES and several problems are solved using Mathcad, EES and TEST to illustrate the problem solving techniques in both the chapters.

- This book deals with two important chapters in Applied Thermodynamics, viz. “Cycles for Gas Turbines and Jet propulsion” and “Vapor power cycles”.
Brayton cycle is the air standard cycle for Gas Turbines. Modifications to the Ideal Brayton cycle to increase the thermal efficiency are also studied; these include adding a regenerator and resorting to multistage compression in the compressor and multistage expansion in the turbine.
Jet propulsion cycle used for aircraft propulsion is also analysed.
Several Functions/ Procedures are written in Mathcad and EES to determine network, thermal efficiency etc of the Ideal and actual Brayton cycles.
“Vapour Power cycles” are analyzed with particular reference to Ideal Rankine cycle and its variations, used in Steam Power Plants.
Several useful Mathcad Functions are written for properties of steam in superheated and two-phase regions, since Mathcad does not have built-in Functions for steam, and these will be extremely useful in solving problems on Rankine cycle.
Also, many useful Functions/Procedures are written in EES for different variations of Rankine cycle.
In both these chapters, problems from University question papers and standard textbooks are solved with Mathcad, EES and TEST.
