Introduction
Ostreopsis sp. is well known in the tropics as a potentially harmful tychoplanktonic dinoflagellate (Parsons
et al., 2012). In the recent decades, species of the genus
Ostreopsis are proliferating in temperate latitudes (Soliño
et  al., 2020), including the Mediterranean Sea coasts,
where recurrent blooms have occurred in Lebanon (Açaf
et  al., 2020), Tunisia (Ben Gharbia et  al., 2019), Italy
(Accoroni et al., 2017), Spain (Casabianca et al., 2014),
Algeria (Illoul et  al., 2012), and Monaco (Cohu et  al.,
2011).
Abstract This study revealed the dynamics of the
genus Ostreopsis in the south-western Mediterranean Sea fish farm during the 2016 and 2017 summers. This phytoplankton is known to produce palytoxin-like compounds, listed among the most potent
marine toxins known, and can pose a serious concern
for humans in the Mediterranean area. Principal component analysis (PCA) explained the significance of
temperature, salinity, and dissolved inorganic nitrogen in the proliferation of this toxic dinoflagellate.
The peak of the Ostreopsis sp. (6.34 × 10

)
was recorded at 28.4  °C, at a salinity of 38.3 PSU,
and the dissolved inorganic nitrogen had a value of
Highlights
• Ostreopsis sp. reported in sea bream fish farm.
• Positive correlation between Ostreopsis sp. proliferation,
and temperature, salinity, and dissolved inorganic nitrogen.
• Competition between Ostreopsis sp. proliferation, and
other microorganisms
