carrying out experiments on bulb sets for prospective tidal power
stations.
.
Only about two dozen places in the world have the necessary tidal
‘head of water’ and the type of sites suitable for locating a dam.’Of
these no more than ten have been seriously considered. Obviously,
from what has been said already in this section, the Severn Estuary
has been a major contender for some time. It has been estimated
that a tidal power station set across the estuary from near Cardiff to
the north and near Weston—super—Mare to the south could supply
perhaps a twelfth of the United Kingdom’s power as well as provide
an additional road link between Wales and south—west England.
The Russians will probably be the next to beast a large tidal
station. Soviet engineers under Lev Bernstein have their eyes on the
potential 16,000 megawatts of tidal energy thought to be available in
the White Sea. A series of stations are planned for the Gulf of Mezen
north—east of Arkhangelsk. In 1962 the Russians decided to con—
struct a Small (800 kilowatt) experimental station at Kislogubsky
near Murmansk. The main body of the station was built away from
the site and then the 5,400—t0n structure ”was towed into position——
a novel solution to the problem of erecting a power station in the
harsh conditions _of northern Russia. Building the main body of
