National Institute of Oceanography, now exist

necessary data, but even so the complex surface interactions Which
they record still defy complete _explanation. Fortunately suicient is
known to provide a basis for improvements in ship design (see
Chapter 8) and also to help in forecasting oceanic conditions.
Wave prediction based on meteorological forecasts has already
yielded some promising results in the North Atlantic and North
Pacic Oceans. Forecasts of the likely state of the sea in terms of
both weather and waves enables commercial ships to avoid con—
ditions which might cause delays and damage. And as ship operators
come to realize the commercial benets to be derived from these
forecasts, forward planning of ship routes is likely to become
