G-8
Glossary
equivalent to one unit of measurement on an aerial
photo.
photogrammetry the process of making
measurements using aerial photos.
PLEIADES a high-resolution series of satellites.
points zero-dimensional vector objects.
polygons two-dimensional vector objects.
Prime Meridian the line of longitude that runs
through Greenwich, England, and serves as the 0
degree line of longitude to base measurements from.
principal point the center point of an aerial photo.
prism map a thematic map that has the map shapes
extruded to a value based on the values shown on the
map.
prisms the extruded shapes on a prism map.
pseudo-3D a term often used to describe the
perspective view of a terrain model since it is often a
2.5D model, not a full 3D model.
pseudorange the calculated distance between a GPS
satellite and a GPS receiver.
Quantile a data classification method that attempts
to place an equal number of data values in each class.
query the conditions used to retrieve data from a
database.
QuickBird a satellite launched in 2001 by the
DigitalGlobe company, whose sensors have 2.4-meter
multispectral resolution and 0.61-meter panchromatic
resolution.
radiometric resolution a sensor’s ability to
determine fine differences in a band of energy
measurements.
raster data model a conceptualization of
representing spatial data with a series of equally
spaced and sized grid cells.
ratio data a type of numerical data in which the
difference between numbers is significant, but there is a
fixed non-arbitrary zero point associated with the data.
Rayleigh scattering scattering of light caused by
atmospheric particles smaller than the wavelength
being scattered.
records the rows of an attribute table.
red band the range of wavelengths between 0.6 and
0.7 micrometers.
reference database the base network data used as a
source for geocoding.
reference map a map that serves to show the location
of features, rather than thematic information.
relational operator one of the six connectors (=,
< >, <, >, >=, or =<) used to build a query.
relief displacement the effect seen in aerial imagery
where tall items appear to “bend” outward from the
photo’s center toward the edges.
remote sensing the process of collecting information
related to the reflected or emitted electromagnetic
energy from a target by a device a considerable
distance away from the target onboard an airborne or
spacecraft platform.
reproject changing a dataset from one map
projection (or measurement system) to another.
RF representative fraction—a value indicating
how many units of measurement in the real world
are equivalent to how many of the same units of
measurement on a map.
RGB a color scheme based on using the three primary
colors red, green, and blue.
Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) an error measure
used in determining the accuracy of the overall
transformation of the unreferenced data.
rotated when the unreferenced image is turned
during the transformation.
satellite imagery digital images of Earth acquired by
sensors onboard orbiting spaceborne platforms.
SATELLITES Students and Teachers Exploring Local
Landscapes to Interpret the Earth from Space—an
OhioView initiative involving K–12 teachers and
students with geospatial technologies.
SBAS Satellite Based Augmentation System—a
method of using correction information sent from an
additional satellite in the GPS position determination.
scale bar a graphical device used on a map to
represent map scale.
scaled when the scale of the unreferenced image is
altered during the transformation.
