12.1 Geospatial Lab Application
Earth Observing System Imagery
This chapter’s lab will introduce you to some of the basics of examining
EOS (Earth Observing System) imagery from the Terra and Aqua satellites. You will be examining data from MOPITT as well as many types of
MODIS imagery using online resources along with NASA World Wind and
Google Earth.
NASA World Wind is a free program (like Google Earth) created by NASA
to incorporate many types of satellite imagery (such as Landsat, Terra, and
Aqua) into a virtual globe interface.
Objectives
The goals of this lab are:
a Examining the usage and function of MODIS imagery.
a Utilizing NASA World Wind as a tool for examining remotely sensed
imagery.
a Using Terra and Aqua imagery for environmental analysis.
a Examining EOS imagery in Google Earth.
Obtaining Software
a The current version of NASA World Wind (1.4) is available for free download at http://worldwind.arc.nasa.gov/download.html.
a The current version of Google Earth (6.0) is available for free download
at http://earth.google.com.
Important note: Software and online resources sometimes change fast.
This lab was designed with the most recently available version of the software at the time of writing. However, if the software or Websites have significantly changed between then and now, an updated version of this lab (using
the newest versions) is available online at http://www.whfreeman.com/
shellito 1e.
Lab Data
There is no data to copy in this lab. All data comes as part of the NASA software or will be downloaded from sources on the Internet.
