Session 2 :La télédétection comme moyen d’appui (Burkina Faso)
138
In spite of the Sahelian nature of the country, the south-west area covering a surface of
60 600 km
2 contains important land and water resources. That area has an intensive
activity of mobilization and use of water: the sugar plantation area of Sosuco (3 800
hectares), the rice area of the Kou Valley (1 000 hectares), 1 300 hectares of reclaimed
lowlands for the Comé rice project, the plain of Douna (400 hectares), the rice surface of
Karfiguela (350 hectares).
These potentialities constitute the reasons for the growing number of migrants on the
south-west lands where various projects and activities are simultaneously developed
without any management planning or coherence. In addition is the weak growth in land
resources for sustainable management.
Faced with this reality the Regional Department of Hydology in the « hauts bassins »,
through the development and management of a Water Resources Programme (Reso) in the
south-west of Burkina Faso, financed by the European Development Fund (7th EDF), has
undertaken to carry out a Master Plan which will serve as a framework for the collection
of indispensable data for the planning and management of natural resources with an
ecosystem approach. These data will be integrated in a geographical information system
(GIS).
To carry out these aims the use of remote sensing has been favoured. Thus, to characterize
the present situation Landsat TM images of 1994 will be used. The assess-ment of soil
degradation will be done with the help of two series of images (Landsat MSS and TM)
with a 12-year interval (1984 and 1994). In certain cases the study of aerial photographs
will complete the ground observations foreseen from 1994 to 1997.
INTRODUCTION
