Adults attain about 23 cm in body length.

Mouth small, eyes large.
No teeth in upper or lowerjaw.

Tail forked.
Body color silver-white, dorsal surface, blue.
Above lateral lines observed twelve wide lateral bands of
dark brown.
Swim in schools during the day and night.
Have weak phototaxis.

Live in middle and lower waters of the seacoasts.
Eat mainly small marine animals located by means of
sight.
In Japan Sea, live in waters of a depths of
100—150m
Extent of migration comparatively wide.
Swimming movement slow.
Found generally in the waters of the southern part of Japan,
but also found in the coastal waters of Japan’s main island
and the north of Japan Sea which is reached by the warm
current.
Caught by purse seine or small
trawlers using fish luring
lights.

Bulbus olfactorius closely attached to lobus olfactorius and
comparativeiy large.
Lobus opticus enormously large.
Corpus cerebelli small.
Eminentia granularis comparatively large.
