Adults attain about 30 cm in body length.

Body compressed; dorsal line curved greatly;

Nostrils especially large.
Body color black-purple on dorsal surface and light in lower
part.
Live in the waters around reefs in inner inlets and along
the seacoasts.
Active at night, prey upon crustacea, small worms and
shelltish
located by means of auditory and olfactory senses.
Very sensitive to sound.
Extent of migration comparatively limited.
Distribution extends widely from the waters of central Japan
and southward to East China Sea, seas of Korea, Ryükyû
and Formosa.
Caught at night by singie pole and lines and long lines.
Bulbus olfactorius closely attached to specially large [obus
olfactorius. Lobus inferior very large.
Lobus opticus and,
corpus cerebelli are not large.
Eminentia granularis
comparatively well—developed.
