Adults attain about 150
cm
in body length.
This spcies is the largest among flatfish found in Japan.

Body elongated.
Head small.
Nostrils and mouth large.
Body color brown with beautiful blotches.
Live in the sandy region of the continental shelf.
The movement of this species is not clearly known.
Likely
to eat small fishes and other small marine animals at the
sea-bottom or in the lower layer of waters.
It is thought to
use sight
considerably in searching for food.
Distribution extends from the waters of northern part of
Japan to the waters of Kuril Islands, Saghalien, the Sea of
Okhotsk and the north Pacific.
Caught by trawlers and trawls.
Nervus olfactorius thick.
Bulbus olfactorius slightly large and closely adhered to
somewhat large lobus olfactorius.
Lobus olfactorius asymmetric is consisting of two
hemispheres otdifferent size.
The central axis of telencephalon bends slightly to the right
side.

Lobus inferior long oval with fissures running longitudinally
on
ventral aspect.
Hypophysis and saccus vasculosis very
large.
Lobus opticus V-shaped.

Lobus opticus has quite large foveae in the anterior parts
of both sides.
Corpus cerebelli erect type and hypertrophied at the top.
