Adults attain about 45 cm in body length.
Elongated body slightly compœssed, covered with ctenoid

scales.

Head comparatively small with mouth widely cleft obliquely.

Nostrils large.
Upper and lower laws equal in length.

Body color dark-grey.
Longitudinal bands on body sides
indistinct.
Except during the spawning season, live near the surface,
middle and lower waters of about 150—200m deep.
Swim in schools day and night.
Swimming around searching for small marine animals by means
of olfactory sense at night and, in the daytime by
sight.
Extent of migration comparatively narrow.
Swimming movement somewhat quick.
Found in Japan Sea and the northern part of the Pacific
Ocean.
Caught by trawlers.
Nervus olfactorius thick.
Bulbus oltactorius somewhat large and closely attached to
[obus olfactorius. Lobus inferior flat and expanded laterally.
Lobus opticus egg-shaped, and somewhat large.
Corpus cerebelli comparatively well-developed.
Eminentia granuralis large.
