SOME FEATURES OF DROP-TRACKS 439

cameras
are
usually used to take sterecsc0pz‘c
pictures in order that the tracks may be seen in three dimensions.
For weak tracks, photographs are taken with the light scattered
in the forward direction, since this is more intense than that at
right angles to the beam.

Some of the Features of Drop—tracks.—In gmmil:
See gure 12—18. Heavy, slow particles produce broad, densely
packed, straight line tracks With an occasional sharp, small
.
angle bend, especially near the end. Light, slow particles produce
marrow, beaded, tortuoùs tracks. Fast particles, both light and
heavy, produce narrow, beaded, straight tracks. At lower pressures, the tracks are longer but retain the characteristics of a
given kind of particle.

ip/za Particles.—Read Section 12—6. The tracks are straight
and comparatively broad, their Width depending, among 'other
factors, on the square
root of the time interval from the passage
'
of the particle to the formation of the droplets onthe ions. The
ionization is very
intense along the track so that it appears as a
continuous line.
If the droplets were formed on the ions at such
a late time that they were able to diffuse over an appréciable width,
the track would appear “fuzzy” and individual droplets could
be seen.
Alpha tracks are comparatively short (the range of these

particles at the existing gas pressure) and are slightly heavier near
—
their ends.
When the gas pressure in the chamber is Comparatively"
_
low, the tracks have a beaded character along their sides, due to
secondary electrons (delta rays).
