changes are very small in comparison to the total current since
they are due to a change of only a few particles in billions.
Since the variations in the plate current are too small and take
place too frequently to be observed directly, an indirect method of
proof must be used. The changes of current are used to set up
oscillations in an inductance-capacitance circuit, LC of gure 5—3.
'
A momentary increase in the charge in the condenser occurs ,
as the plate current undergoes a slight increase. This additional
quantity of electricity discharges through the inductance in the
usual oscillatory manner. The oscillations thus produced occur at
a frequency equal to 1/27r \/ZΑ, the natural or resonant frequency
of this circuit.
In other words, the irregular changes of plate current set up oscillations in LC by “shock excitation.”
