Finally, with regard to compact size and shock resistance required for a true field instrument,
the arc lamp-based instruments with epi-illumination optics are probably superior to laserbased systems, and in particular the systems which comprise large water-cooled lasers. Still,
we will probably have to wait a few years before we can carry our flow cytometer on board
the research vessel in a rucksack.
