Figure 13 shows the relative PDS phase as a function of scattering angle for pure suspensions
of several different viable bacteria. The discrimination among the bacteria is quite
reproducible. It may be possible to make these measurements with a flow cytometer.
A few scattered light polarization measurements have been made with a flow cytometer. The
partial depolarization of the light scattered at right angles to the laser beam in a flow
cytometer has been used to distinguish human eosinophils from monocytes, lymphocytes, and
neutrophils (deGrooth et al., 1987). A 45 degree beam splitter in the right angle scatter
detector path reflects part of the scattered light onto a detector. The signal from this
