Description
Lower margin of carapace provided with one lateral denticle. Rostrum short and pointed, triangular in shape, and as long or longer than wide.
Frontal plate not well differentiated. Eyes spherical and of medium size. Basal segment of antennular peduncle bearing large, wide and rounded
lobe or lappet on inner distal margin; lappet projected forward and somewhat upward. In large
specimens, 2nd segment bearing small denticles
on inner and outer distal corners. Third segment
bearing high dorsal keel with rounded upper
margin and straight frontal margin. Antennal

scale extending beyond distal margin of 2nd antennular segment. Lateral spine of basiscerite
reaching distal margin of eye. Third abdominal
segment projected on distal dorsal margin in
short and fragile accuminated process. This process may be completely lacking in small and
large specimens. Preanal spine provided with
one or two secondary spines, which are larger in
females than in males. Subterminal spines of telson lacking denticles on inner margins. However, in some cases, they may be present but in
small numbers. Terminal process of petasma
slender. Proximal heel poorly developed. Distal
end bifurcated with inner ramous expanded and
provided, in some cases, with small denticle.
Outer ramous as long as inner one.
Proximal process longer and more robust
than terminal process and expanding, on distal
end, in 2 membranous leaf-like lappets. Anterior
lappet straight and as long as posterior one
which bears small denticle on inner side. Wide
secondary spine situated next to bifurcation of
lappets. Lateral process strongly curved and
bearing strong tooth on distal end and minute
denticle-like process. Setiferous lobe bearing 4
seate on inner margin, 2 on outer margin and 2
at tip. Coxal plates developed laterally in 2 finger-shaped prominences. Anteriorly, there is a
small opening of the pocket; this is delimited laterally by 2 folds of the coxal plates and posteriorly by a rather triangular-shaped ridge of the sternite (Guglielmo and Costanzo 1978).
Remarks
The diagnostic features of E. vallentini vary to
such an extent, that they resemble E. lucens, another sub-An tarc tic species also found in the
northern range of the Chilean fjord region (An-
